The focus on the environmental impacts of buildings has been emissions from operational energy use/carbon emissions. As those are reduced through improvements in insulation, glazing, lighting, heat pumps, and renewable energy, what remains are the emissions due to the mining/harvesting/manufacturing/transport of the materials used to build. The ability to calculate and track the carbon emissions embodied in the materials we use has advanced markedly in the past decade, with standard reporting methods such as Environmental Product Declarations available, and easy-to-use tools such as the online BEAM Calculator. We’ll look at the basics of embodied carbon, which decisions in wood-frame construction have the most impact on embodied carbon, and show some comparisons of these decisions, and how they compare with operational carbon emissions.
